17-4PH / 630 Fasteners for High-Strength Industrial Applications
17-4PH, also known as Type 630 or UNS S17400, is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel containing chromium, nickel, copper and niobium.
The alloy combines high strength and hardness with good corrosion resistance and practical machining characteristics. It is commonly supplied in the solution-treated condition and subsequently aged to obtain the required mechanical properties.
Different aging conditions provide different combinations of strength, hardness, ductility and toughness. The final material condition should therefore be specified according to the application, product dimensions and governing project requirements.

Why 17-4PH / 630 Is Selected for Critical Fastening Applications
17-4PH combines high strength, age-hardening flexibility and good corrosion resistance for demanding mechanical and precision fastening systems.

High Strength & Hardness
Age hardening provides high tensile and yield strength for demanding load-bearing and mechanically stressed connections.

Adjustable Strength-Toughness Balance
Different aging conditions allow engineers to balance strength, hardness, ductility and toughness according to the application.

Controlled Heat-Treatment Response
Solution-treated material can be machined before receiving the specified age-hardening treatment and final mechanical properties.

Good Corrosion Resistance
17-4PH provides better corrosion resistance than many conventional hardenable martensitic stainless steels while maintaining high mechanical strength.
17-4PH / 630 Material Identification & Specifications
17-4PH, Type 630 and UNS S17400 identify the same alloy family, while the applicable standard defines the ordered product form and condition.

Common 17-4PH Material Conditions
The selected aging condition determines the final balance of strength, hardness, ductility and toughness.
Solution-treated condition prior to age hardening.
Condition A is the solution-treated condition of 17-4PH and is commonly used for machining before the specified aging treatment. The final material condition shall follow the governing specification or customer drawing.
Highest strength and hardness among the commonly used single-aging conditions.
H900 is typically selected where maximum room-temperature tensile strength, yield strength and hardness are required.
High strength with improved ductility, toughness and stress-corrosion resistance compared with H900.
H1025 provides a useful balance for demanding mechanical components requiring high strength with improved toughness.
Balanced strength, ductility and toughness for general high-strength applications.
H1075 is suitable where the highest H900 strength is unnecessary and a more balanced mechanical condition is preferred.
Lower strength with higher ductility and toughness.
H1150 is generally selected where toughness and ductility are more important than maximum strength and hardness.
H900, H1025, H1075 and H1150 are heat-treatment conditions, not separate stainless steel grades.
Chemical Composition of 17-4PH
Chromium, nickel, copper and niobium provide the corrosion resistance and precipitation-hardening response of 17-4PH stainless steel.

Mechanical Performance of 17-4PH / 630
The selected aging temperature controls the balance between strength, hardness, ductility and toughness in 17-4PH stainless steel.
| Material Condition | Tensile Strength (MPa) | 0.2% Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Typical Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H900 | Approx. 1365 | Approx. 1262 | Approx. 15 | Approx. 44 HRC |

Technical Note: These are typical room-temperature material values, not universal finished-fastener minimums. Actual properties depend on product form, dimensions, heat treatment and the governing specification.
17-4PH Heat-Treatment Condition Selection Guide
Select the material condition according to the required strength, hardness, ductility, toughness
and project specification.
| Application Requirement | Recommended Condition |
|---|---|
| Machining before final age hardening | Condition A |
| Maximum tensile and yield strength | H900 |
| Maximum hardness | H900 |
| High strength with improved toughness | H1025 |
| Improved stress-corrosion resistance compared with H900 | H1025 or higher aging temperature |
| Balanced strength and ductility | H1075 |
| Higher toughness with reduced strength | H1150 |
| Final production and acceptance | Condition stated in the governing specification or drawing |
Selection Note: The heat-treatment condition should be confirmed before quotation and production, especially when hardness, tensile testing or dimensional stability is specified.
